Kehamilan yang tidak direncanakan terlebih dahulu dapat menganggu kehidupan sosial, kesehatan, dan psikologi ibu maupun anak.
Kehamilan yang tidak direncanakan dikelompokkan menjadi dua yaitu kehamilan mistimed dan unintended.
Kehamilan yang tidak diharapkan oleh ibu terjadi saat ini melainkan sang ibu ingin waktu lebih lama lagi untuk hamil disebut kehamilan mistimed. Sedangkan kehamilan yang tidak di harapkan terjadi saat ini maupun di masa depan disebut kehamilan unintended. Dengan kata lain, ibu sama sekali tidak ingin hamil dan melahirkan bayi.
Ibu yang belum siap menerima bahwa dirinya hamil sering kali melahirkan bayi prematur dan bayi dengan berat badan lahir rendah dimana hal ini dapat meningkatkan risiko kematian bayi sebelum mencapai ulang tahun pertama. Ibu yang belum siap juga dapat menambah angka kesakitan dan kematian ibu hamil.
Sering sekali ibu yang tidak merencanakan kehamilannya kurang peduli terhadap kondisi janin bahkan dapat membahayakan nyawa janin melalui perilaku yang kurang baik, yaitu tindakan tidak memeriksakan kehamilan, stres, depresi, kebiasaan merokok, dan minum alkohol selama kehamilan.
