Sejarah kesusastraan Inggris dimulai dari Old English. Old English period disebut juga Anglo Saxon period. Pada old English period, orang-orang yang pertama kali mendiami kepulauan Inggris adalah suku bangsa Kelt. Mereka adalah suku bangsa primitive dan bahasa yang mereka gunakan adalah bahasa Kelt yang sangat berbeda dengan bahaasa Inggris. Pada tahun 50 sesudah Masehi,tentara Romawi menduduki Inggris secara permanen dan menjadikan Inggris sebagai provinsi Kekaisran Romawi. Setelah tentara Romawi ditarik mundur untuk selama-lamanya, suku Germanik mulai menyerbu ke kepulauan Inggris. Suku-suku bangsa ini adalah Jutes, Angles, dan Saxon yang berasal dari Jerman Utara. Suku-suku inilah yang menjadi nenek moyang orang Ingris. Karena kejadian itu suku Kelt tidak lagi mampu mempertahankan diri.

After the withdrawal of Roman troops in perpetuity, the tribe began to invade the Islands Germanik United Kingdom. Tribes of this nation is the Jutes, Angles and Saxons, who came from Northern Germany. It is these tribes became the ancestor of those Stations. Because the Celtic are no longer able to defend themselves.
