In many cases, komponen dari compounds mengidentifikasi kelas umum yang berarti kepunyaan dari seluruh kata. Sebaliknya pada sedikit kasus, makna dari compound tidak di ikuti oleh arti dari bagian-bagian dengan cara ini. Cara ini disebut exocentric.
