Pantai Kuta di Bali yang sangat terkenal memiliki sejarah penting sejak abad ke-14. Kuta mulai dikenal sejak 1336 M, dimana Gajahmada dan pasukannya dari Majapahit, mendarat di bagian selatan pantai ini. Karena sering menjadi lokasi persinggahan, pelan-pelan daerah ini menjadi pelabuhan kecil. Warga pun menyebut kawasan di Banjar Segara Kuta ini dengan nama Pasih Perahu yang berarti pantai perahu.

Sebelum menjadi kawasan wisata, Pantai Kuta merupakan sebuah pelabuhan dagang. Pada abad ke-19, salah seorang pedagang warga Denmark, Mads Lange, datang ke Bali untuk mendirikan basis perdagangan di Kuta. Mads Lange terkenal pandai bernegosiasi sehingga bisa merebut hati raja-raja Bali dengan Belanda.
Salah saeorang penulis, Hugh Mahbett, juga menerbitkan sebuah buku berjudul “Praise to Kuta” yang berisi ajakan kepada masyarakat setempat untuk menyiapkan fasilitas akomodasi wisata. Buku ini bertujuan untuk mengantisipasi ledakan wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Bali. Buku tersebut kemudian menginspirasi banyak orang untuk membangun fasilitas wisata seperti penginapan, restoran dan tempat hiburan.

Pada tahun 2002 dan 2005 keramaian ditempat ini sempat terhenti karena adanya pengeboman di Kuta. Peristiwa ini menyebabkan banyak turis mancanegara menjadi korban dan banyak Negara melarang warganya untuk bepergian ke Indonesia pada waktu itu.

Pada serangan pertama, 12 Oktober 2002, teroris berhasil menewaskan sebanyak 202 orang dan 209 orang lainnya cedera. Sedangkan serangan kedua terjadi pada 2005 tepat di Pantai Kuta. Industri pariwisata Bali menghadapi tantangan berat pada waktu itu karena kejadian ini mendapat liputan media asing.

Namun seiring berjalannya waktu, kuta terus mengalami perbaikan-perbaikan baik dengan adanya berbagai macam hiburan baru, maupun service pelayanan dari lokasi wisata setempat. Pemerintah daerah Bali berinisiatif untuk membuat rencana induk pengembangan wilayah ini untuk melestarikan pantai Kuta sebagai sebuah tempat wisata yang bernuansakan alam. Dengan demikian, setiap orang yang berkunjung ke pantai Kuta akan merasakan sebuah suasana yang baru dan nyaman serta lain dengan yang dirasakan di tempat lain.
