Periode Elizabeth juga dikenal sebagai periode Renaissance dalam kesusastraan Inggris. Yang dimaksud dengan Renaissance adalah humanism yang artinya kedudukan manusia lebih tinggi dan manusia bersifat individual. Zaman Elizabeth adalah permulaan munculnya zaman modern.

Penyair yang terkenal pada zaman Elizabeth adalah Edmund Spenser. Salah satu sajaknya yang terkenal adalah “The Faery Queen”. Karya lain Spenser yang terkenal adalah “Shepherd’s Calendar”. Penyair-penyair lain yang terkenal adalah Thomas Sackville, sajaknya yang terkenal adalah “The Mirror of Magistrates”. Dengan dituntun oleh tokoh alegoris bernama Sorrow. Bersama dengan Thomas Norton, Sackville juga menulis tragedy Inggris pertama yang berjudul “Ferrex and Porrex”.
