Sel merupakan suatu unit fungsional terkecil peyusun mahkluk hidup. Sel punca atau sel induk merupakan suatu bagian lain penyusun makhluk hidup. Sel punca adalah sel yang belum terdiferensiasi, namun memiliki kemampuan untuk berkembang dan membentuk jaringan atau organ yang lebih spesifik. Sel punca terbagi menjadi dua, yaitu sel punca embrionik dan sel punca dewasa. Sel punca embrionik berasal dari embrio yang kemudian membelah diri dan terus berkembang menjadi organ. Sel punca dewasa merupakan sekelompok sel yang tidak terdeferensiasi yang terdapat di antara sel-sel terdiferensiasi dalam jaringan atau organ tubuh, kadang ditemukan dalam keadaan inaktif pada jaringan yang telah memiliki fungsi spesifik dalam tubuh individu. Sel punca bermanfaat untuk menguji obat-obatan dan terapi sel atau organ.
