Ketika 5 cm memulai perjalanannya sebagai sebuah film petualangan, tema penceritaan yang awalnya berkisah tentang persahabatan terasa berubah total menjadi kisah rasa nasionalisme masing-masing karakternya terhadap negara tempat mereka tinggal – lengkap dengan deretan dialog yang diutarakan dengan nada deklamasi yang, harus diakui, cukup menggelikan untuk didengarkan.
