Untuk lebih dapat memahami faktor resiko jatuh, harus dimengerti betul bahwa stabilitas badan itu ditentukan atau dibentuk oleh :

• Sistem sensorik
Pada sistem ini yang berperan di dalamnya adalah penglihatan dan pendengaran. Semua gangguan atau perubahan pada mata akan menimbulkan gangguan penglihatan. Begitu pula semua penyakit telinga akan menimbulkan gangguan pendengaran.
• Sistem saraf pusat (SSP)
Penyakit SSP seperti stroke dan parkinson hidrosefalus tekanan normal, sering diderita oleh lanjut usia dan menyebabkan gangguan fungsi SSP sehingga berespon tidak baik terhadap input sensorik (Tinneti, 1992).
• Kognitif
Pada beberapa penelitian, dimentia diasosiasikan dengan meningkatnya resiko jatuh.
• Muakuloskeletal
Faktor ini betul-betul berperan besaar terjadinya jatuh terhadap lanjut usia. Gangguan muskuloskeletal menyebabkan gangguan gaya berjalan dan ini berhubungan dengan proses menua yang fiiologis, misalnya :
- kekakuan jaringan penghubung
- berkurangnya masa otot
- perlambatan konduksi saraf
- penurunan visus atau lapang pandang
