CHAPTER IDISCUSSION A. Intrinsic Elements Of Poetry To know and understand the content of the poem "The Man He Killed", the authors will discuss the elements of poetry such as that described in the previous chapter. This is done to see how these elements work together in producing meaning in the poem. 1. Theme It not only describes an idea or ideas in creating a masterpiece, but the poet also wanted to convey something that is present in his work. Something that could be either message, content or even the problem is inside the author. Looking for a theme in a work is certainly not easy to get, because the author has a goal and purpose in a particular theme in his work implies. Most of the poetry of Thomas Hardy contain elements of pessimism, reflecting the dark side of human beings, especially his capacity for violence and cruelty, is no exception in the poetry of The Man He Killed. Hardy was a meliorist, meliorist is a belief which holds that the world is likely to get better and the future may be brighter if everyone works towards improvement. In other words, we have to save themselves by helping each other and be kind towards all fellow beings. The poetry of The Man He Killed shows the folly of war and destroys trust in the patriotic motive of those who confront each other in battle. Use third person pronouns "he" even though the poem is narrated in the first person, focusing on humanity-kesia war, tells the story of a man who doesn't have a job and enlisted in the military service as a soldier because he needed the salary, not due to patriotic reasons on his people (Off-hand like — just as I —/Was out of work — had sold his traps —/No other reason why Temple, 4th). By using the techniques I, si monologue dramatization lyrics trying to explain the reason to kill another person just because they fight the opponent in the battle of dipihak and resides on different circumstances (I shot him dead because — he was Because/my foe/Just so: my foe of course he was, the 3rd Temple). The lyrics I feel that war is something very vain, planned and organized cruelty is (Yes; farm quaint acres and curious war is!/You shoot a fellow down the fifth stanza, lines 1-2). Perhaps if he and his foes meet in another chance, not in the battlefield (in peace), they will certainly help each other instead of killing each other (you'd treat, if met where any bar is/Or help to half a crown, the fifth stanza lines 3-4). Hardy enter enough information for the reader to understand a perspective on human cruelty against each other.
