CHAPTER IDISCUSSION A. Intrinsic Elements Of Poetry To know and understand the content of the poem "The Man He Killed", the authors will discuss the elements of poetry such as that described in the previous chapter. This is done to see how these elements work together in producing meaning in the poem. 1. Theme It not only describes an idea or ideas in creating a masterpiece, but the poet also wanted to convey something that is present in his work. Something that could be either message, content or even the problem is inside the author. Looking for a theme in a work is certainly not easy to get, because the author has a goal and purpose in a particular theme in his work implies. Most of the poetry of Thomas Hardy contain elements of pessimism, reflecting the dark side of human beings, especially his capacity for violence and cruelty, is no exception in the poetry of The Man He Killed. Hardy was a meliorist, meliorist is a belief which holds that the world is likely to get better and the future may be brighter if everyone works towards improvement. In other words, we have to save themselves by helping each other and be kind towards all fellow beings. I— / Was out of work—had sold his traps— / No other reason why, bait ke-4). I shot him dead because— / Because he was my foe / Just so: my foe of course he was, bait ke-3). Si aku lirik merasa bahwa perang adalah sesuatu yang sangat sia- sia, direncanakan dan merupakan kekejaman yang terorganisir (Yes; quaint and curious war is! / You shoot a fellow down, bait kelima baris ke 1-2). You'd treat, if met where any bar is / Or help to half a crown, bait kelima baris ke-3- 4).
