Pada umumnya, toleransi diartikan sebagai pemberian kebebasan kepada sesama manusia atau kepada sesama warga masyarakat untuk menjalankan keyakinannya atau mengatur hidupnya dan menentukan nasibnya masing-masing, selama di dalam menjalankan dan menentukan sikapnya itu tidak bertentangan dengan syarat-syarat atas terciptanya ketertiban dan perdamaian dalam masyarakat.
