Alelopati berasal dari kata allelon (saling) dan pathos (menderita) (Junaedi dkk. 2006). Menurut Molisch, alelopati meliputi interaksi biokimiawi secara timbal balik, yaitu yang bersifat penghambatan maupun perangsangan antara semua jenis tumbuhan termasuk mikroorganisme. Alelopati sebagai keadaan merugikan yang dialami tumbuhan akibat tumbuhan lain, termasuk mikroorganisme, melalui produksi senyawa kimia yang dilepaskan ke lingkungannya (Ferguson et al., 2013).
