Perguruan Tinggi Islam yang khusus

Perguruan Tinggi Islam yang khusus terdiri dari fakultas-fakultas keagamaan mulai mendapat perhatian kementrian Agama pada tahun 1950. Pada tanggal 12 Agustus 1950, Fakultas Agama di UII dipisahkan dan diambil alih oleh pemerintah dan pada tangal 26 September 1951 secara resmi dbuka perguruan Tinggi baru dengan nama Perguruan Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri (PTAIN) di bawah pengawasan Kementerian Agama. Pada tahun 1957, di Jakarta didirikan Akademi Dinas Ilmu Agama ADIA). Akademi ini dimaksudkan sebagai sekolah latihan bagi para pejabat yang berdinas dalam pemerintahan dan untuk pengajaran agama di sekolah. Pada tahun 1960, PTAIN dan ADIA disatukan menjadi Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN), juga dibawah Kementerian Agama.
