Jika kita membaca karya-karya Shakespeare dengan cermat, maka kkita akkan memperoleh kesan bahwa karya-karya itu dapat dibagi dalam 4 periode yang mungkin sejajar dengan pengalaman dan pertumbuhan jiwapenulisnnya. Periode-periode itu adalah:
1. Perode permulaan atau periode eksperimen (1588-1596). Periode ini dimulai sejak Shakespeare sampai di London pada kira-kira tahun 1588. Karya-karya yang khas dari periode ini adalah: “Love’s Labour’s Lost”, “Two Gentlemen of Verona”, “Commedy of Erros”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Richard III”, “King John”.
2. Periode pertumbuhan cepat (1596-1602). “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “The Merchant of Venice”, “Henry IV”, “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, “As You Like It”, “Twelfth Night” adalah sebagian dari karya-karya yang dihasilkan dari periode ini.
3. Periode kemuraman dan depresi (1602-1608). Dalam periode ini ditulis tragedy-tragedi besar seperti “Hamlet”, “ Othelo”, “Macbeth”, “King Lear”, “Julius Caesar”.
4. Periode ketenangan (1608-1613). Periode ini mengakhiri masa produktif Shakespeare. “Winter’s Tale”, dan “Tempest” adalah karya-karyanya yang terbaik yang ditulis dalam periode ini.

The period of gloom and depression (1602-1608). In this period of great tragedy-tragedy written such as "Hamlet," "Macbeth," "Othelo", "King Lear", "Julius Caesar".4. The period of tranquility (1608-1613). This period ended the period of productive Shakespeare. "Winter's Tale" and "the Tempest" is the best of his works written in this period.
