Tradisi novel hiburan terikat dengan pola-pola. Dengan demikian dapat dikatakan bahwa novel serius punya fungsi social, sedangkan novel hiburan Cuma berfungsi personal. Novel berfungsi social karena novel yang baik ikut membina orangtua masyarakat menjadi manusia. Sedang novel hiburan tidak memperdulikan apakah cerita yang dihidangkan tidak membina manusia atau tidak, yang penting adalah bahwa novel memikat dan orang mau cepat–cepat membacanya.
