Dalam masyarakat jawa terdapat banyak adat istiadat yang masih berjalan hingga sekarang. Seperti masih seringnya dilakukan upacara- upacara, syukuran, selametan dll. Biasanya dalam acara- acara tersebut terdapat suatu tradisi khas yang bisa berbentuk makanan, minuman, tarian, nyanyian dan lain lain. Masyarakat jawa biasanya mempercayai dari berbagai macam tradisi khas tersebut. Dalam sebuah tradisi/khas dalam sebuah acara biasanya masyarakat jawa meyakini terdapat makna didalamnya. seperti halnya makanan, contohnya tumpeng. Tumpeng selalu dipakai dalam acara- acara resmi,tumpeng diyakini mempunyai makna mensyukuri nikmat Tuhan yang telah memberikan berkahnya kepada kita. Dalam hal ini saya akan membahas tentang makanan tradisional khas Jogjakarta yaitu “ sego golong”.
“Sego Golong” secara bahasa berarti “nasi yang dikepal dan dibulat-bulatkan”. “sego” adalah nasi putih biasa. “golong” berarti satu keluarga bersatupadu untuk mendoakan keluarga yang sudah meninggal. Keluarga yang ditinggalkan membuat sebuah syukuran dengan menyajikan makanan khas yang bermakna untuk mengirimkan doa kepada arwah yang telah meninggal. Dilain arti Sego atau nasi golong, merupakan doa agar rejekinya ‘golong-golong’ artinya banyak berlimpah ruah. Ada juga yang mengatakan bahwa menyajikan sego golong ini adalah sebagai permintaan doa kepada Allah. Menu ini sangat erat dalam tradisi kuliner masyarakat Jawa yang secara umum memiliki filosofi/arti “bersatu”. Sego golong adalah sebuah makanan khas jawa yang berupa nasi putih biasa yang mempunyai khas berbentuk gulungan.
Sego golong ini dibuat dengan berbahan dasar nasi putih yang kepal-kepal/dibulatkan dan disajikan dengan lauk Urap sayuran, suwiran ayam, potongan tempe dan tahu, dan sayur bening. Biasanya disajikan dengan tempat yang disebut “ besek”. “ besek” adalah tempat penyajian makanan khas yang dipakai dalam acara- acara jawa seperti kenduri,syukuran,selametan dll. Sego golong disajikan dalam besek tersebut dan disamping sego golong biasanya terdapat nasi yang diuraikan. Biasanya sego golong ini dipakai diacara-acara kenduri,selametan atau syukuran. Biasanya dalam acara kenduri,selametanjumlah sego golong disajikan sesuai dengan jumlah keluarga dalam suatu keluarga tersebut. Makanan “ sego golong” golong ini juga bisa dipakai diacara acara lain, yang bertujuan untuk memohon doa Allah. Tidak hanya masyarakat Jogjakarta saja yang menggunakan seg golong ini dalam kenduri,selametan dan syukuran,tapi masyarakat jawa didaerah lain juga menggunakannya dalam acara tersebut, seperti daerah Jawa Timur,Jawa tengah dan Jawa Barat juga menggukannya. Tidak ada perbedaan dalam bentuk atau nama dari sego golong dari setiap daerah tersebut. Dalam arti kata di daerah Jawa semuanya nya tidak ada perbedaan, karena ini adalah makanan khas yang sudah turun temurun dari adat sebelumnya.
Biasanya dalam acara kenduri atau syukuran, masyarakat diundang untuk dating kerumah yang mengadakan acara, setelah dilakukan beberapa pembacaan doa, pihak keluarga biasanya menyajikannya dalam wadah yang besar dan kemudian untuk dibagikan kepada para tetangga atau biasanya para tetangga makan dirumah tempat pihak yang mengadakan syukuran atau kenduri. Biasanya nasi golong digabung beserta makanan makanan lain yang digabung menjadi satu dan kemudian dibungkus didalam plastic, dan kemudian dibagikan satu persatu kepada tetangga yang hadir atau dibagikan kerumah- rumah tetangga yang dekat.
Dalam masa sekarang ,tradisi memasak atau menyajikan sego golong ini masih dilakukan. Karena dalam tradisi jawa, adat istiadat turun temurun adalah hal yang sangat penting. Dan sego golong ini adalah salah satu makanan khas yang masih tetap digunakan dalam acara upacara,syukuran, selametan, dan kenduri. Jadi sebagai masyarakat yang cinta akan kebudayaan Indonesia, kita harus tetap menjaga dan melestarikan adat istiadat tersebut
