Laju pernapasan (breath rate) atau disebut juga napas permenit (bpm) dihitung dari berapa kali proses inspirasi (penarikan, dada naik) dalam satu menit. Laju napas seperti laju detak jantung, berubah setiap waktu walaupun pada saat kita istirahat. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh gairah, berbicara, postur tubuh, kesehatan dan faktor lainnya. Tidak ada standar laju pernapasan pada manusia, akan tetapi peneliti mengemukakan bahwa laju napas antara 12-20 bpm pada orang dewasa. Ada perspektif berbeda pada saat kapan kita harus memenuhi target laju napas yang optimal
