Pada saat berada di hutan setelah kejadian Bale Sigala-gala, ibunya meminta Bima dan Arjuna untuk mencari dua bungkus nasi untuk Nakula dan Sadewa yang sedang kelaparan. Bima datang ke sebuah negeri bernama Kerajaan Manahilan dan di sana Bima menjumpai Resi Hijrapa dan istrinya yang sedang menangis. Saat ditanya penyebabnya, mereka menjawab bahwa putra mereka satu-satunya mendapat giliran untuk dimakan oleh raja di negeri tersebut. Raja dari negeri tersebut yang bernama Prabu Baka atau Prabu Dawaka memang gemar memangsa manusia. Tanpa pikir panjang, Bima langsung menawarkan diri sebagai ganti putra pertapa tersebut. Saat dimakan oleh Prabu Baka, bukannya badan dari Bima yang sobek, tetapi gigi dari Prabu Baka yang putus. Hal ini menyebabkan Prabu Baka marah, tetapi dalam perkelahian melawan Werkudara, Prabu Baka tewas dan seluruh rakyat bersuka ria karena raja mereka yang gemar memangsa manusia telah meninggal. Oleh rakyat negeri tersebut, Bima akan dijadikan raja, namun Bima menolak. Saat ditanyai apa imbalan yang ingin diperoleh, Bima menjawab ia hanya ingin dua bungkus nasi, lalu setelah mendapat nasi tersebut, Bima kembali ke hutan dan kelak keluarga pertapa itu bersedia menjadi tumbal demi kejayaan Pandawa di Baratayuda.
