Amida digunakan untuk mengendalikan kecambah gulma semusim, khusunya dari golongan rumputan. Herbisida ini lebih aktif bila diaplikasikan pada permukaan tanah sebagai herbisida pratumbuh. Mekanisme kerja utama herbisida yang tergolong dalam kelas amida adalah mempengaruhi sintesa asam nukleat dan protein. Butaklor, pretilaklor, alaklor, dan propanil termasuk dalam kelas amida ini.
