Karena merupakan seni dan ilmiah, penelitian memberikan ruang-ruang yang akan mengakomodasikan adanya perbedaan tentang konsep penelitian. Penelitian dapat pula diartikan sebagai cara pengamatan atau inkuiri dan bertujuan mencari jawaban permasalahan atau proses penemuan, baik discovery atauinvention .Discovery diartikan sebagai hasil penemuan yang sebetulnya memang sudah ada. Invention dapat diartikan sebagai penemuan hasil penelitian yang betul-betul baru dengan dukungan fakta. Secara umum tujuan kegiatan penelitian adalah menjelaskan dunia di sekitar kita melalui upaya yang sistematis (Kamil, 1995). Berdasar pada rumusan tersebut, tujuan penelitian pengajaran bahasa adalah upaya yang sistematis untuk menjelaskan, memahami, memecahkan, dan mengantisipasi masalah-masalah pengajaran bahasa. Secara rinci tujuan penelitian pengajaran bahasa adalah sebagai berikut:
a. menemukan dan mengembangkan teori, model, atau strategi baru dalam pengajaran bahasa;
b. menerapkan, menguji, dan mengevaluasi kemampuan teori, model, strategi pengajaran bahasa dalam memecahkan masalah pengajaran bahasa;
c. mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan keadaan atau hubungan berbagai isu ataupikiran yang terkait dengan masalah bahasa inggris
d. memecahkan masalah pengajaran bahasa;
e. menemukan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi masalah pengajaran bahasa;
f. membuat keputusan atau kebijakan mengenai pengajaran bahasa.
Penelitian Pengajaran bahasa Inggris (English Language Teaching: ELT) merupakan suatu masalah yang sangat kompleks. Ada sejumlah variabel atau faktor yang secara potensial dapat mempengaruhi keberhasilan pengajaran bahasa asing. Namun, faktor metode mengajar dapat dianggap sebagai faktor determinan dalam menentukan keberhasilan pengajaran bahasa Inggris.Meskipun demikian, telah banyak upaya yang dilakukan untuk mengembangkan kualitas pengajaran bahasa Inggris, secara umum hasilnya masih sangat memprihatinkan.
