What is research?
Research is a general term which covers all kinds of studies designed to find responses to worthwhile questions by means of a systematic and scientific approach.according toNunan (1992, 3)Research is a systematic process of inquiry consisting of three elements or components: (1) a question, problem or hypothesis, (2) data, and (3) analysis and interpretation.”Penelitian merupakan art and science guna mencari jawaban terhadap permasalahan (Yoseph dan Yoseph dalam Syamsuddin dan Damaianti, 2006:2). Karena merupakan seni dan ilmiah, penelitian memberikan ruang-ruang yang akan mengakomodasikan adanya perbedaan tentang konsep penelitian. Penelitian dapat pula diartikan sebagai cara pengamatan atau inkuiri dan bertujuan mencari jawaban permasalahan atau proses penemuan, baik discovery atauinvention .Discovery diartikan sebagai hasil penemuan yang sebetulnya memang sudah ada. Invention dapat diartikan sebagai penemuan hasil penelitian yang betul-betul baru dengan dukungan fakta. Secara umum tujuan kegiatan penelitian adalah menjelaskan dunia di sekitar kita melalui upaya yang sistematis (Kamil, 1995). Berdasar pada rumusan tersebut, tujuan penelitian pengajaran bahasa adalah upaya yang sistematis untuk menjelaskan, memahami, memecahkan, dan mengantisipasi masalah-masalah pengajaran bahasa. Secara rinci tujuan penelitian pengajaran bahasa adalah sebagai berikut:
a. menemukan dan mengembangkan teori, model, atau strategi baru dalam pengajaran bahasa;
b. menerapkan, menguji, dan mengevaluasi kemampuan teori, model, strategi pengajaran bahasa dalam memecahkan masalah pengajaran bahasa;
c. mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan keadaan atau hubungan berbagai isu ataupikiran yang terkait dengan masalah bahasa inggris
d. memecahkan masalah pengajaran bahasa;
e. menemukan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi masalah pengajaran bahasa;
f. membuat keputusan atau kebijakan mengenai pengajaran bahasa.
Penelitian Pengajaran bahasa Inggris (English Language Teaching: ELT) merupakan suatu masalah yang sangat kompleks. Ada sejumlah variabel atau faktor yang secara potensial dapat mempengaruhi keberhasilan pengajaran bahasa asing. Namun, faktor metode mengajar dapat dianggap sebagai faktor determinan dalam menentukan keberhasilan pengajaran bahasa Inggris.Meskipun demikian, telah banyak upaya yang dilakukan untuk mengembangkan kualitas pengajaran bahasa Inggris, secara umum hasilnya masih sangat memprihatinkan.

Research can also be interpreted as a way of observation or inkuiri and aims to find answers to problems or the process of discovery, the discovery well atauinvention. Discovery results are interpreted as actually indeed already there. Invention can be defined as research results are downright recently with the support of facts. In general the purpose of the research activities is to explain the world around us through systematic efforts (Kamil, 1995). Based on that formula, the goal of language teaching research is a systematic attempt to describe, understand, solve, and anticipate the problems of language teaching. In detail the purpose of the research teaching of the language is as follows: a. find and develop theories, models, or new strategies in language teaching; b. apply, test, and evaluate the ability of theories, models, language teaching strategies in solving problems of language teaching; c. describe and explain the circumstances or the relationship of the various issues associated with problem ataupikiran Englishd. solve the problem of language teaching; e. find the factors that affect the issue of language teaching; f. make decisions or policies concerning language teaching. United Kingdom language teaching research (English Language Teaching: ELT) is a very complex issue. There are a number of variables or factors that potentially could affect the success of foreign language teaching. However, the method of teaching may be considered a determinant factor in determining the success of language teaching United Kingdom.
