Wilayah Kabupaten Kepulauan Selayar

Wilayah Kabupaten Kepulauan Selayar terdiri atas 130 pulau, dan hanya 26 pulau yang berpenghuni. Wilayah kabupaten ini memiliki gugusan atol yang sangat cantik, dengan luas sekitar 2,200 km2, dan satu-satunya gugusan atol terluas di Indonesia. Gugusan atol ini ditetapkan sebagai taman nasional laut, dengan nama Taman Nasional Taka Bonerate. Taman nasional ini, bersama dengan pulau-pulau lain dalam wilayah kabupaten Kep Selayar, memiliki potensi untuk pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan (melalui penelitian dan pendidikan), penunjang peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat (melalui pengembangan budidaya perikanan, pariwisata/rekreasi, serta pelestarian budaya) dan pelestarian alam. Dengan potensi demikian, UNESCO menetapkan wilayah Kep Selayar sebagai Cagar Biosphere.
