Surjan sendiri adalah sejenis baju takwa. Awalnya surjan berwarna cokelat, berlengan panjang dan bercorak garis-garis. Surjan memiliki enam kancing yang melambangkan Rukun Iman. Namun sekarang sudah mengalami banyak modifikasi. Dalam versi Keraton Surakarta, surjan diganti dengan beskap. Beskap adalah sejenis jas yang bagian bawahnya lebih pendek daripada jas biasa.
