Zaman dahulu di bulan terdapat sebuah taman yang amat indah. Di taman itu tumbuh pohon-pohonan hijau yang dihuni oleh berbagai macam burung. Di tengah-tengahnya ada sebuah kolam yang berlumpur. Dari dalam kolam itu menyembul berjenis-jenis bunga teratai. Di sekeliling pagar kolam itu bermekaran bunga-bungaan aneka warna. Keindahannya sungguh menawan setiap gadis dan pemuda yang lewat.

Suatu sore, menjelang matahari tenggelam, seorang gadis cantik berjalan-jalan di taman itu. Nama gadis itu Putri Bulan. Ia diiringi beberapa gadis dayang-dayang antara lain Awan dan Mega. Dari pohon-pohon terdengar nyanyian burung yang bersahut-sahutan, seolah-olah mengiringi perjalanan putri itu. Burung-burung besar sepeti Garuda, Rajawali dan Gandasuli, bertugas mengawasi kalau-kalau ada pemuda iseng yang mengganggu putri itu.

Ada seorang pemuda tampan, namanya Si Pungguk. Ia juga ingin menikmati keindahan taman itu. Dilihatnya Putri Bulan yang cantik itu memetik beberapa kuntum bunga. Ketika mata pemuda itu bertatapan dengan Putri Bulan, seketika pemuda itu jatuh cinta. Demikian pula Putri Bulan. Ia sangat terpesona melihat ketampanan pemuda itu.
Burung Garuda yang sejak tadi mengawasi gerak-gerik pemuda itu, tiba-tiba hinggap di depannya. “Hai, Pungguk!” bentaknya. “Jangan coba-coba mendekati Putri Bulan! Kau rakyat jelata! Ayo pergi jauh!” katanya sambil mengepakkan sayapnya lebar-lebar.

Pemuda tampan itu jatuh ke dalam kolam lumpur. Badannya berlepotan, nafasnya terengah-engah. Ia berusaha bangkit, tetapi ketiga burung besar itu menghadangnya. Akhirnya si Pungguk mati tenggelam.
Putri Bulan yang menyaksikan kejadian itu menangis. Demikian pula Awan dan Mega. Mereka tak kuasa menghadang tindakan burung-burung yang kejam itu.
