Sutomo atau biasa kita kenal Bung Tomo adalah pahlawan yang terkenal karena perannya dalam membangkitkan semangat juang rakyat Indonesia dalam melawan kembalinya penjajah Belanda melalui tentara NICA, dan akhirnya berakhir dengan peristiwa 10 November 1945 yang sampai saat ini diperingati sebagai Hari Pahlawan. Sutomo pernah bekerja sebagai pegawai pemerintahan, asisten di kantor pajak pemerintah, dan sampai ke pegawai kecil di perusahaan ekspor-impor Belanda.
Di usianya yang ke 12 tahun, Sutomo meninggalkan pendidikannya di MULO karena dia harus melakukan berbagai pekerjaan untuk mengatasi masalah ekonomi keluarga. Setelah itu dia menyelesaikan pendidikan HBS nya melalui korespondensi, tapi tidak pernah resmi lulus. Akhirnya Sutomo bergabung dengan KBI (Kepanduan Bangsa Indonesia). Di usia yang ke-17 tahun, ia berhasil menjadi orang kedua Hindia Belanda yang mencapai peringkat “Pandu Garuda”.
Setelah kemerdekaan Indonesia, Sutomo aktif dalam politik di tahun 1950-an. Tapi pada awal tahun 1970-an, ia berbeda pendapat dengan pemerintah Orde Baru. Sutomo berbicara keras terhadap program-program Presiden Soeharto sehingga pada tanggal 11 April 1978 dia ditahan karena kritiknya selama satu tahun.
Pada tanggal 7 Oktober 1981 ia meninggal dunia di Padang Arafah, ketika sedang menunaikan ibadah haji. Berbeda dengan tradisi untuk memakamkan para jemaah haji yang meninggal saat ziarah ke tanah suci, jenazah Bung Tomo dibawa kembali ke tanah air lalu dimakamkan bukan di Taman Makam Pahlawan, melainkan di Tempat Pemakaman Umum Ngagel di Surabaya.

In contrast to the tradition to bury a Haj worshippers died when the pilgrimage to the Holy Land, cadaver Bung Tomo was brought back to the homeland and then was buried not in Taman Makam Pahlawan, but in Public Cemeteries Ngagel in Surabaya.
