Perkembangan penelitian terkait identifikasi area bekas kebakaran hutan dan lahan menggunakan data penginderaan jauh saat ini telah mengakibatkan peningkatan kebutuhan data luas kebakaran hutan dan lahan baik dalam skala regional hingga global (Giglio et al. 2009). Selain itu, Peraturan Pemerintah No 45 tahun 2004 tentang Perlindungan Hutan telah mensyaratkan bahwa salah satu kegiatan penanganan pasca kebakaran adalah pengukuran dan sketsa lokasi kebakaran. Namun demikian, terdapat beberapa kesulitan saat pengukuran di lapangan. Dari pengambilan data luasan di lokasi yang sulit terjangkau, hingga hasil yang dilakukan dengan perkiraan, oleh karena itu akurasinya sangat dipertanyakan. Dengan demikian, upaya untuk mendapatkan data yang akurat dan dapat mengatasi beberapa kendala yang dihadapi di lapangan diperlukan teknologi yang mampu memberikan solusi, salah satunya dengan memanfaatkan data penginderaan jauh seperti MODIS.
