Sastra adalah karya fiksi yang merupakan hasil kreasi berdasarkan luapan emosi spontan pengarang yang mampu mengungkapkan aspek keindahan baik yang didasarkan kebahasaan maupun makna. Sastra dapat juga diartikan sebagai suatu kegiatan kreatif, sebuah karya seni. Definisi pada sastra adalah membatasinya pada ”maha karya” yaitu buku-buku yang dianggap menonjol karena bentuk dan ekspresi sastranya. Dalam hal ini kriteria yang dipakai adalah segi estetis, atau nilai estetis yang dikombinasikan dengan nilai ilmiah. Diantaranya puisi, prosa, drama, dan cerita rekaan lainnya, merupakan maha karya yang pilih berdasarkan pertimbangan estetis. Karya sastra lain yang dipilih karena kecemerlangan ilmiah, ditambah penilaian estetis atas gaya bahasa, komposisi, dan kekuatan penyampaianya.
Sastra terdiri dari tiga bentuk yaitu puisi, prosa dan drama. Cerita pendek merupakan sebuah karya fiksi prosa yang tertulis dan naratif. Umumnya sebuah cerita pendek bercerita tentang tokoh-tokoh dan kelakuan mereka dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dengan menitik beratkan pada sisi-sisi yang aneh dari naratif tersebut. Unsur-unsur pembangun karya sastra terdiri dari unsur intrinsik dan unsur ekstrinsik.
Tiap pengarang memandang suatu persoalan dari sudut pandang tertentu. Berdasarkan sudut tinjauannya itu, ia kemudian merangkai unsur-unsur pembangun kisahnya dalam suatu jalinan yang erat dan efektif untuk mengungkapkan permasalahan yang akan disampaikannya. Dengan demikian, tiap karya sastra menyajikan dunia rekaan yang unik, hasil khas ciptaan pengarangnya. Sama halnya dengan cerita going home karya Willian Saroyan.
