Writing is the expression of language in the forms of letters, symbols, or words. The primary purpose of writing is communication. Menulis adalah suatu kegiatan penyampaian pesan (komunikasi) dengan menggunakan bahasa tulis sebagai sarananya.
Menurut McCrimmon dalam Khudharu, menulis merupakan kegiatan menggali pikiran dan perasaan mengenai suatu subjek, memilih hal-hal yang akan ditulis, menentukan cara menuliskannya sehingga pembaca dapat memahaminya dengan mudah dan jelas. Senada dengan pendapat Marry S, Lawrence yang menyatakan bahwa menulis adalah mengkomunikasikan apa dan bagaimana pikiran penulis.
Hardjono membagi bentuk-bentuk kemampuan menulis menjadi tiga, yaitu kemampuan reproduktif, reseptif-produktif, dan produktif. Kemampuan reproduktif adalah menyalin teks dari buku atau yang dicatat dipapan tulis. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk membiasakan peserta didik menulis kata-kata dalam bahasa asing.
Dari beberapa pendapat diatas dapat disimpulkan bahwa, menulis merupakan kegiatan yang dilakukan seseorang dalam menuangkan gagasan ataupun pikirannya dalam bentuk tulisan yang berfungsi untuk menyampaikan ide-ide atau gagasan yang dimilikinya dan sebagai alat komunikasi, yaitu komunikasi tertulis.
Pada dasarnya prinsip menulis adalah sebagai alat komunikasi secara tidak langsung. Menulis sangat penting bagi pendidikan karena memudahkan pra pelajar berpikir. Dengan menulis kita dapat menuliskan ide atau gagasan-gagasan kita. Sebagaimana halnya juga dalam Islam perintah menulis juga tercantum dalam beberapa ayat alqur’an diantaranya:
