Seharusnya, pola asuh di lingkungan keluarga dilakukan secara bersama-sama oleh ayah dan ibu. Walaupun dalam kenyataannya, pelaksanaannya lebih dominan dilakukan oleh ibu ketimbang ayah dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hal ini tidak terlepas dari gambaran tradisional tentang peran laki-laki dan wanita dalam kehidupan keluarga, yang cenderung masih menampakkan unsur perbedaan antara laki-laki dan wanita secara badaniah. Sebagaimana tercermin dalam pernyataan Supartiningsih berikut ini, “…pembagian kerja gender tradisional (gender base division of labour) menempatkan pembagian kerja, perempuan di rumah (sektor domestik) dan laki-laki bekerja di luar rumah (sektor publik)”.
