The Insider diangkat dari kisah nyata perjuangan dan dinamika yang dihadapi oleh Dr. Jeffrey Wigand (Russel Crowe), seorang mantan eksekutif perusahaan rokok terkenal di AS, dalam mengungkap kebohongan yang dilakukan oleh perusahan tempat ia pernah bekerja. Sebagai mantan ‘orang dalam’ perusahaan rokok Wigand tahu betul keculasan dan kebohongan industri rokok dalam praktek kerjanya. Sehingga ketika ia berubah haluan tentunya Industri rokok merasa terancam kepentingannya. Karena mengejar keuntungan sebanyak-banyaknya, perusahaan rokok rela melakukan apapun untuk membuat produk mereka laku di pasaran. Perusahaan rokok tanpa memperhatikan konsekuensi yang akan ditimbulkan melakukan pembohongan dengan menambah zat penambah kecanduan dan menyatakan bahwa nikotin itu tidak menimbulkan adiksi. Namun karena takut rahasianya dibongkar, sebelum melakukan PHK terhadap Wigand perusahaan menyodorkan Confediality Agreement yang mengikatnya untuk tidak membocorkan rahasia perusahaan kepada siapapun. Dengan Confidentiality Agreement inipun Wigand dan keluarga masih mendapatkan tunjangan perumahan dan kesehatan meskipun ia sudah tidak bekerja untuk B&W.
