2. Klasifikasi herbisida berdasarkan pada waktu aplikasinya
Ada dua tipe herbisida berdasarkan aplikasinya yaitu herbisida pra tumbuh (preemergence herbicide) dan herbisida pasca tumbuh (postemergence herbicide). Yang pertama disebarkan pada lahan setelah diolah namun sebelum benih ditebar (atau segera setelah benih ditebar). Biasanya herbisida jenis ini bersifat nonselektif, yang berarti membunuh semua tumbuhan yang ada. Yang kedua diberikan setelah benih memunculkan daun pertamanya. Herbisida jenis ini harus selektif, dalam arti tidak mengganggu tumbuhan pokoknya.
