Sudah cukup lama Electronic Arts (EA) tidak meluncurkan seri terbaru dari game simulasi kehidupan The Sims. Game terakhir dari seri tersebut, The Sims 3, diluncurkan pada bulan Juni 2009.

Memang dalam perjalanannya, EA sempat meluncurkan berbagai ekspansi dari game tersebut. Namun, ekspansi ini hanya menghadirkan cerita, peta, dan karakter baru. Ekspansi tersebut tidak menghadirkan peningkatan grafis dan perubahan gameplay yang terlalu berarti.

EA dan developer Maxis sudah mengumumkan akan meluncurkan The Sims 4 pada tahun 2014 mendatang. Nantinya, game The Sims 4 ini akan diluncurkan untuk platform PC dan Mac.
