Serratia mercescens is a gram-negative bacterium bacillus shaped, motile, and according to the nature of their oxygen requirements are facultative anaerobes. Serratia mercescens have chitinase enzyme that can hydrolyze chitin polymer into chitin oligosaccharides or monomer N-acetylglucosamine (Brurberg, 2000). Additionally, Serratia mercescens also produces a red pigment called prodigiosin. Pigments prodigiosin reported to have antifungal activity, antimicrobial, algicidal, antiprotozoal, antimalarial, anti-cancer, and imunosupressif (Samrot et al, 2011). Serratia mercescens have properties resistant to antibiotics because it has the R-factor in the plasmid (gene which codes for antibiotic resistance).
