Senyawa metabolit sekunder seperti fenolik, terpenoid, alkaloid, steroid, poliasetilena, dan minyak esensial dilaporkan memiliki aktivitas alelopati. Metabolit primer tertentu juga memiliki peranan dalam alelopati, seperti asam palmitat dan stearat, tetapi umumnya senyawa alelopati termasuk ke dalam golongan metabolit sekunder. Senyawa fenolik dengan kelarutan dalam air tinggi dilaporkan memiliki aktivitas alelopati yang rendah. Sebaliknya senyawa fenolik dengan kelarutan dalam air rendah memiliki aktivitas alelopati yang tinggi (Rice 1984; Inderjit & Keating 1999).

The primary metabolite also has a specific role in Allelopathy, such as stearic and Palmitic acids, but generally include Allelopathy compounds into the secondary metabolites. Phenolic compounds with high water solubility reportedly has a low activity of Allelopathy. Phenolic compounds in contrast with low solubility in water has a high activity of Allelopathy (Rice 1984; Inderjit & Keating 1999).

Certain primary metabolites also have a role in the residues, such as palmitic and stearic acids, but generally compound residues belong to a class of secondary metabolites. Phenolic compounds with high solubility in water residues are reported to have low activity. Instead of phenolic compounds with low solubility in water has a high residues activity (Rice 1984; Inderjit & Keating 1999).
