Pemanfaatan tumbuhan yang memiliki sifat allelopatik ini bersifat aman karena mudah terurai di alam. Cara kerja allelopati yaitu merusak tumbuhan lain dengan melepaskan senyawa-senyawa allelokimia yang dapat menghambat pertumbuhan tumbuhan lain (Moenandir, 1993).
