Pendidikan berjalan bersama jamannya, berjalan bersama kehidupan masyarakat yang terus berkembang pula. Pendidikan dalam perjalanannya tak bisa mengelak dari problem-problem yang terus bermunculan menghadangnya. Problem-problem itu berbeda dalam kadarnya, dan pada gilirannya problem-problem itu berbeda dalam penanganannya, ada yang bisa cepat diatasi, ada pula yang butuh waktu lama serta ada yang meminta pertolongan pada pihak lain, pihak filsafat pendidikan. Permintaan tolong pada filsafat pendidikan itu sebuah kewajaran karena problem yang dihadapi pada dasarnya bukan lahan atau kapling pendidikan melainkan lahan garapan filasafat pendidikan. Filasafat pendidikan suatu ilmu yang membahas bidang pendidikan secara filosofis. Filsafat pendidikan pun merupakan suatu jawaban filosofis terhadap pertanyaan yang filosofis dalam dunia pendidikan. Hakikat pendidikan, isi, tujuan dan kebijakan dalam dunia pendidkan menjadi lingkup kajian filsfat pendidikan. Untuk itu filsafat pendidikan memiliki peranan dan fungsi yang strategis dalam dunia pendidikan. Sedang metode-metode untuk mengkajinya perlu mempertimbangkan relevansinya. Metode studinya terdapat metode rasionalistik, metode empirik, metode intuisi, metode reflektif, metode historis, dan metode analisis sintetis serta hermeneutika. Sementara pendekatan yang digunakan filsafat pendidikan dengan berkiblat pada ajaran filsafat dan pendidikan. Aspek ontologi, epistemologi dan aksiologi menjadi teropong aspek dalam mengkaji bidang pendidikan sehingga bisa melihat tentang hakekat, proses dan nilai guna pendidikan. Selain mengkaji pendidikan secara ontologi, epistemologi dan aksiologi, tulisan ini juga mengusung aliran-aliran atau mazhab-mazhab filsafat pendidikan; yakni idealisme, realisme, materialisme, pragmatisme, progresivisme, esensialisme, perenialisme, eksistensialisme, rekontruksionisme, dan konstruktivisme. Aliran-aliran tersebut memiliki karakteristik sendiri-sendiri dalam memandang dunia pendidikan, dunia yang dibutuhkan manusia yang dapat mengantarkan pencerahan hidup dan kehidupannya.
