Termasuk ke dalam riya’ yaitu sum’ah, yakni melakukan suatu amalan agar orang lain mendengar apa yang kita lakukan, sehinga pujian dan ketenaran pun datang tenar. Riya’ dan semua derivatnya merupakan perbuatan dosa dan merupakan sifat orang-orang munafik. Riya' dan Ujub termasuk perbuatan yang dilarang dalam Islam dan wajib dijauhi oleh setiap Muslim. Keduanya adalah termasuk akhlak tercela (akhlaqul madzmumah). Tutuplah kebaikan diri kita, sebagaimana kita menutup aib-aib kita di hadapan orang lain. Hal ini adalah yang dikhawatirkan oleh Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam berabad-abad silam. Beliau bersabda, “Sesuatu yang aku khawatirkan menimpa kalian adalah perbuatan syirik asghar.
