Daerah ini cukup dikenal di kalangan masyarakat Bandung dan merupakan salah satu saksi sejarah dari berdirinya kota Bandung. Sejak tahun 1920an, para arsitek yang merancang dan menata kota Bandung memiliki rencana untuk menjadikan sebuah kawasan sebagau kebun terbuka dan juga hutan kota bagi masyarakat umum.Kawasan yang dimaksud adalah kawasan yang diberi nama Lebak Gede yang dalam Bahasa Indonesia berarti lembah besar. Lembah ini dilewati oleh Sungai Cikapundung. Di bagian selatan dari sungai ini, para arsitek membangun sebuah taman botani, yang terdiri dari berbagai macam tanaman, dan pepohonan, yang diberi nama Jubileumpark. Jubileumpark inilah yang menjadi asal muasal daerah Tamansari di kota Bandung. Di dalam Tamansari, dibangun juga sebuah jalan yang menjadi batas selatan dari Lebak Gede yang disebut dengan Jalan Huygenweg, yang saat ini juga diberi nama Jalan Tamansari. Di jalan ini, dibuat juga kebun binatang, yang pada saat ini menjadi Kebun Binatang Bandung
