Berdasarkan Undang-Undang No. 20 Tahun 2003 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional, BAB XI, pasal 39, butir (2) pendidik merupakan tenaga profesional yang bertugas merencanakan dan melaksanakan proses pembelajaran, menilai hasil pembelajaran, melakukan pembimbingan dan pelatihan, serta melakukan penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat, terutama bagi pendidik pada perguruan tinggi.
