Novel merupakan bentuk karya sastra yang paling populer di dunia. Bentuk sastra ini paling beredar, karena daya komunikasinya yang luas pada masyarakat. Sebagai bahan bacaan, novel dapat dibagi menjadi dua golongan yaitu sastra serius dan sastra hiburan bisa disebut sebagai karya sastra serius. Sebuah novel serius bukan saja dituntut menjadi karya yang indah, menarik dan juga memberikan hiburan kepada pembacanya, tetapi lebih dari itu. Syarat utama novel adalah harus menarik, menghibur dan mendatangkan rasa puas setelah orang selesai membacanya.
