Bahan yang dilarutkan dapat larut baik dalam air (garam amina dan sodium dari 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, MCPA) dan dapat larut baik dalam minyak (formulasi asam-induk dan DNBP, Pentachoro phenol, ester 2,4-D). Molekul bahan terlarut akan berdisosiasi menjadi ion-ion dalam larutan. Ion-ion tersebut dapat bergabung dengan bebas dengan ion lain dari larutan.
