This technique was developed by Annear in 1954, 1956, and in 1962 (Sly, 1983) and successfully used to store bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and viruses. This technique modified by Banno and Sakane (1979). The effectiveness of this technique for storage of yeast is evidenced by Banno et al. (1979).
