Penderitaan yang menyedihkan semasa kecil hingga dewasa tidak perlu dihadapi dengan pahit, namun dapat dihadapi dengan humor yang bisa menertawakan diri. Seperti halnya sebuah memoir yang populer hasil karya Frank McCourt, seorang ekspatriat Irlandia di Amerika Serikat. Buku memoir yang memenangkan penghargaan Pulitzer itu kemudian diangkat sutradara Alan Parker ke dalam film yang bertajuk sama.
Novel ini mengisahkan bagaimana Frank McCourt menghadapi kemiskinan yang membelit keluarganya sejak lahir hingga dewasa. Dilahirkan di Brooklyn, Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1930 dalam keluarga Irlandia, Frank adalah anak tertua dari pasangan Angela dan Malachy McCourt.
Angela dan Malachy adalah imigran Irlandia yang beremigrasi ke Amerika Serikat untuk mencari kehidupan lebih baik. Sayangnya kehidupan mereka tidak juga membaik. Kalau pun mendapatkan pekerjaan, Malachy lebih suka menghabiskan uangnya dengan bermabuk-mabukan sehingga Angela pun menjadi depresi dan terpaksa bergantung pada belas kasihan kerabat dan gereja. Walau di tengah penderitaan dan kemiskinan yang mendera, Frank masih bisa melaluinya dengan senyum dan humor.
