Suku ini tinggal di hulu sungai Makekal di hutan bukit Duabelas. Suatu hari Butet terkena penyakit malaria di tengah hutan, seorang anak tak dikenal datang menyelamatkannya. Anak itu bernama Nyungsang Bungo. Ia berasal dari Hilir sungai Makekal, yang berjarak sekitar 7 jam perjalanan untuk bisa mencapai hulu sungai, tempat Butet mengajar.
