Sebutan novel dalam bahasa inggris berasal dari bahasa Itali novella, dalam bahasa Jerman novelle berarti sebuah barang baru yang kecil, dan kemudian diartikan sebagai cerita pendek dalam bentuk prosa. Dewasa ini istilah novella dan novelle mengandung pengertian yang sama dengan istilah Indonesia novelet ( Inggris : novelette ) yang berarti sebuah karya prosa fiksi yang tidak terlalu panjang namun juga tidak terlalu pendek.
