Bungo ingin belajar membaca dengan ibu guru Butet agar dapat membaca surat perjanjian itu. Pertemuan dengan Bungo menyadarkan Butet agar memperluas wilayah kerjanya ke arah hilir sungai Makekal. Namun keinginannya itu tidak mendapatkan restu dari tempatnya bekerja, maupun dari kelompok rombong Bungo yang masih percaya bahwa belajar baca tulis bisa membawa malapetaka bagi mereka. Butet mencari segala cara agar ia bisa tetap mengajar Bungo, hingga malapetaka yang ditakuti oleh Kelompok Bungo betul-betul terjadi. Butet terpisahkan dari masyarakat Rimba yang dicintainya.
