Beberapa lokomotif uap adalah 2 unit kelas B 25 (Esslingen 0-4-2RT) yaitu B 2502 dan B 2503 (2 dari 3 unit lokomotif yang tersisa; lokomotif ketiga, B 2501 dimonumenkan di Monumen Palagan Ambarawa). Dahulu, terdapat loko uap kelas E 10 (Esslingen 0-10-0RT), bernomor E 1060 yang semula dikirimkan ke Sumatera Barat pada tahun 1960 untuk menarik kereta api batubara, tetapi kemudian dibawa ke Jawa, dan sebuah lokomotif konvensional 2-6-0T C 1218 yang dihidupkan kembali pada tahun 2006 setelah lama disimpan di Cepu, kemudian direlokasi ke Ambarawa tahun 2002. Namun, lokomotif E 1060 dipulangkan kembali ke Sawahlunto sedangkan lokomotif C1218 dibawa ke Surakarta dijadikan kereta wisata Jaladara. Baru-baru ini museum ini dapat lokomotif diesel hidrolik D 300 23 yang berasal dari dipo lokomotif Cepu yang dipindah ke dipo lokomotif Ambarawa pada 6 Oktober 2010. Lokomotif uap B 5112 yang buatan pabrik Hanomag, telah berhasil dihidupkan kembali setelah 30 tahun mati.
