In the modern era there have been many aspects of life influenced by Western view. One is the theory of consumption. People as consumers assume that their needs and desires are two things that cannot be separated. Someone who needs something will consider some wishes in fulfilling those needs. While the desire of one is very related to one's satisfaction. It is the basis of current consumption theory.
Initially, consumption was only interpreted as spending on goods and services performed by a person or group for the purpose of fulfilling the needs of a person or group making the spend. But with the development of the era, also developed community thinking. Seeing the fact that is happening now, society is becoming more consumptive. The consumption that was originally based on the need to develop into a new or fashion, as the fulfillment of the satisfaction of the desire is even a culture, and satisfaction of the material.
As in the theory of utility (theory of value) which argues that the more we consume the goods, the satisfaction will increase. The theory argues that the satisfaction of the material is physical or material satisfaction. In addition there is a theory proposed by Jhon Maynard Keynes which suggests that there is a minimum limit that does not depend on the income level which means that the level of consumption must be met even if the income level equals zero, which Although there is no income but consumption levels must be met.
From the two theories above we can conclude that the satisfaction is only seen in the form of material that appears to be felt, without looking at the non-material aspect. So that consumption behaviour that is born from the theory makes society only matter the material and ignore other aspects of non-material aspects that are traditionally inherent in humans. People who are only concerned about this material will be materialism because only the material is the benchmark in its consumption.
People who have an understanding of materialism will be able to view everything based on the material in order to rule out everything that transcend the senses. Thus making the material as the basis of necessity in life. The material is mandatory as a consumer consumptive means of living. Thus, people with materialism will not think about things that are non-material. This understanding is the basic ideology of consumption according to Western view.
Indirectly, the ideology gives new meaning of life through consuming materials, so that happiness, pleasure, etc. Only measured based on material calculations. In fact, the ideology has penetrated all aspects of people's lives and has corrosive properties. The only social aspect, the community as an active consumer, considers that matter to be a benchmark in one's degree. So that the community considers that the more material is produced, the higher the degree gained. This understanding became the principle of the thinking of Matrealism, which is the view of one who considers the pleasure and enjoyment of the material as the primary goal in life.
The people who have the understanding will continue to compete in fulfilling the satisfaction of the desire as a necessity in pleasure and enjoyment. This is what caused the gap between rich and poor society. Indirectly, this is also the main role in social inequality, thus leading to progress will not be evenly perceived by all circles or even selfishness will appear in each individual. Thus, materialism will not be an indicator of satisfaction, happiness, and success for humans, this is very contrary to the concept of consumption taught in Islam. Islam refused to be very understanding.
