Associative meaning is disebut juga makna kiasan atau pemakaian kata yang tidak sebenarnya. Makna asosiatif adalah makna yang dimiliki sebuah kata berkenaan dengan adanya hubungan kata dengan keadaan diluar bahasa. Misalnya dengan kata bunglon berasosiasi dengan makna orang yang tidak punya berpendirian tetap.
The Associative meaning have six types :
 Connotative Affective meaning is the meaning that appears due to the reaction of the listeners or readers against the use of language.
 Social meaning is where words are used to establish relationships between people and to delineate social rules.
 Collocation meaning is describes words that regularly appear together in common use (within certain contexts).
 Reflected meaning has to do with when one sense of a particular words affects the understanding and usage of all the other senses of the word.
 Thematic meaning concerns itself with how the order of words spoken effects the meaning that is entailed.
