Teori kognitif dalam belajar bahasa menekankan pentingnya otomatisasi. Dalam model Anderson (cara mengkonseptualisasikan otomatisasi sebagai proses mengkonversi deklaratif menjadi procedural) terdapat dua tahap otomatisasi yaitu deklaratif atau DEK dan procedural atau PRO. Pada teori deklaratif, bahwa pembelajaran bahasa lebih dihadapkan pada penindakan performansi pengetahuan yang tersimpan untuk dibangkitkan dari memori. Pada tahap ini , pembelajaran sangat verbalis. Pengetahuan PRO sangat lemah atau rendah. Artinya performansi bahasanya banyak mengandung kesalahan. Pada tahap proseduralisasi pelajaran mengubah deklaratif ke procedural bisa disebut juga dengan otomatik.
