Dalam hal ini, pengendalian hama didasarkan pada pengetahuan dan informasi tentang dinamika populasi hama dan musuh alami serta keseimbangan ekosistem. Berbeda dengan konsep PHT teknologi yang masih menerima teknik pengendalian hama secara kimiawi berdasarkan ambang ekonomi, konsep PHT ekologi cenderung menolak pengendalian hama dengan cara kimiawi. Dalam menyikapi dua konsep PHT ini, kita harus pandai memadukannya karena masing-masing konsep mempunyai kelebihan dan kekurangan. Kekurangan dari PHT adalah Petani masih menggunakan pestisida sintetis, kurang pengawasan dan tidak berlanjut. Sedangkan kelebihan dari PHT adalah pengendalian didasarkan kepada keberadaan hama dan keanekaragaman hayati (parasitoid dan predator) dan mengurangi/meniadakan pencemaran lingkungan.
